Neil Youngs Alt. Power Mission

Post by matt »

Have a good reccy

Our goal is to inspire a generation by creating a clean automobile propulsion technology that serves the needs of the 21st Century and delivers performance that is a reflection of the driver's spirit. By creating this new power technology we hope to reduce the demand for petro-fuels enough to eliminate the need for war over energy supplies, thereby enhancing the security of the USA and other nations throughout the world

Even if you eggnor the "green" aspects, what a cracking engineering feat

What is the feat here .. ?

That website, unless I am missing something, seems to studiously avoid describing the technology being used.

Is there just ONE page that says clearly, what the chosen solutions are and how they have been implemented?

I think I'm a bit thick, 'cos I cannot get to the bottom of what they are doing here... or is there a reason they might not be spilling the beans?

The Volt is powered by an electric motor and a battery pack with a 40-mile (65-kilometer) range. After that, a small internal combustion engine kicks in to generate electricity for a total range of 300 miles (480 kilometers). The battery pack can be recharged from a standard home outlet.

Right thanks, that's GM's Volt project (230 mpg being 'postulated'!). 40 mile range on the battery before the motor cuts in

Reading further down the Gazette Extra page (strange place to put the basic information)....

Neil Young's LincVolt seems to be using a single rotor wankel engine, hydrogen gas generator, Li-Ion battery pack, and electric motor

Seem to be basing everything on 5 cents per KW-Hr (that's cheap electricity, a unit here costs 10~15p, about 25 ~30 cents)
