Who's running on biodiesel?

Post by barney »

Not straight veg oil, waste veg oil or some turd distilled outta your mates shed, but proper from-the-pumps biodiesel?

I'm running a standard jx 1.6 TD and thinking about taking the plunge.

What percentage? Any issues? And how may trouble-free miles have you clocked up?

Ta for any advice

Barney

I too have heard that older diesels (pre-'90-ish) have trouble with biodiesel as the rubber is different or something like that, so the fuel degrades the fuel lines.

I'd consider changing all the fuel lines and anything else that might come a-cropper.

Also be aware that biodiesel from the pump may or may not have any environmental benefit at all. It might have come over the atlantic from somewhere in South America, for example.

And it's no cheaper than dino-diesel.

Unless you're producing it yourself (or as part of a co-op), I wouldn't bother.

hey hey hey lets all go green with revolutionary "biodiesel!"
biodiesel is regular diesel with 5% veg oil. yes its fully legal. and the veg oil recats with the genuine rubber fuel hoses and seals, if you are running a later model car the have silicone rubber seals these are not affected by the veg oil
biodiesel is a total rip off, its more expensive, yet it uses a waste product to pad it out and is sold as a real "green" alternative.

hope that answers your questions, take the plunge, you will be ok, but dont expect miricles.

ps does anybody know where all the green tax is going? is all the green tax from the whole world in a pot somewhere??

squire, you are right. there are 2 things you could do, put fiat panda 999cc stickers on your van, then it will look very green!
or put stickers on the van stating its a V12 16litre, then the figures for such a beast will justify it as very green, lets face it a 16litre doing 25mpg is very economical!!

A tiny bit of googleing brought up the following page, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EN_14214.

VWJon, the Biodiesel you are referring to must be B5, 5% biodiesel and 95% petroleum diesel.
