mpg

Post by David Last »

Hi all, I've come back with the figures for my trip producing 34 mpg.
Keswick, brim full, 93,446. Sedgemoor Services, brim full, 40.6 Litres 93,755.
309 miles 40.6 litres. unless your ltr/gallon conversion is different to mine that's 34+ mpg. Speedo checked against GPS over a long period reads 2-3 mph fast and I drove at indicated +.
As this is a bit off topic, ie LPG MPG I will close with these comments.
Thanks for all the comments and banter. It's nice to have a forum with good natured banter instead of whats on some other forums I know of.
I will be following the debate on LPG carefully for a bit while getting estimates
for the conversion. Any recomendations?
Thanks
Dave

Dave :-) what was your average speed? The reason i am amazed by your quoted mpg is because it is considerably higher than VW's own figures for fuel consumption under ideal conditions on a test track.. and more or as good as alot of modern cars of smaller engine capacity.. cheers,, Josh

Can't argue Josh. I guess the average was around 50mph. The first section to Penrith was mainly dual then motorway for the rest of the trip. There were no traffic problems, lorry convoys, roadworks etc so my guess is probably pretty accurate. As I said in an earlier post I drive sympatheticaly to the vehicle.
It is 5 speed box.
I didn't expect that result but as I have just retired the extra mpg was welcome. For what it's worth the petrol was ESSO standard unleaded.
Incidentaly I have clocked 30mpg on several motorway trips in the past.

the fiqures qouted in my owners handbook are:
30mpg (DIN) or 29.7mpg (UTAC?) @ 56mph for a 5 speed caravelle
29.7mpg (DIN) or 29.1mpg (UTAC?)@ 56mph for a 4 speed caravelle

27.4mpg (DIN) or 27.7mpg (UTAC?) @ 56mph for a 5 speed Hightop
26.9mpg (DIN) or 26.6mpg (UTAC?) @ 56mph for a 4 speed Hightop

so that makes your mpg Dave more than 23% greater than official figures.. maybe its driving at 50mph or less..

I know from my days in motor sport that drag is negligable below 50mph rising sort of logarithmicly, eg, very roughly not taking into account tyre choice/pressures etc, for a hightop van especially it could equate to every mph over 50 would be approximatly 1% reduction in mpg

I put it down to the low average speed Josh. I'm horrified at some of the figures some guys are quoting. I can only assume they are constantly up and down the gears foot on the floor like a Golf GT  When I first got the van in 95 I drove it like I drove the firms estate car and was only getting 20 to 22 and trying to maintain high(70mph) speeds ( in cross winds not nice)very soon mended my ways :!: I will still pursue the LPG option I think. Sorry if this has bored the others on this particular forum and thanks for your forebearance. May pick this up again at some time in the future.

34mpg is certainly jolly good and you must drive like a saint..
I tried all sorts on my 1.9 caravelle to get better and in the end the vehicle felt happier and easier to drive by sitting at 75mph rather than 60, the 2 mpg difference that I was getting didnt matter as I didnt get in to all sorts of bother on the hills and other slower traffic...

Inspired by David Last - the most economical T25 driver in the the kingdom! - I have attempted for the last tankful of LPG (yes I know - not really that scientific) to increase my current running average of 19.6 MPG on lLPG (Hi Top - Autosleeper - 1.9DG)

210 miles from 44.6 litres (including two brews from the leisure gas) is almost by best yet - (21.4MPG - probably nearer 22 taking into account the leisure gas).

This was all on steady 50mile runs - staying under 55mph (mainly at 50mph) at all times. Also limiting flat out take offs (for what they are worth  ).

My normal driving is nearer 60MPH ish (where possible).

Will try with some more tanks - but 10% increase doesn't seem too bad - now to get 34MPG...... :?

Hi all, Tyres 185R14C all round, fairly new and at recommended pressure.
Incidentaly it was a fairly calm day. Battling into a force 8 lowers the mpg considerably in a Hi-Top as I'm sure you've all noticed!
