temp lowering of van- to fit garage!!

Post by Johnmck »

Hi
got a bit of an odd one here, want to put my panel van in a friends garage but it has an up and over door and the garage floor is higher than road outside. Have done the measureemnts and if it was level van should go in ok. However because of difference in hight front of van will stick up when it goes up the sharp ramp and may hit door above it. There are complications on getting van to the garage etc so I want to avoid getting there but not able to get in!!.

Poss options I have are letting air out of tyres or digging up 2 channels in floor!!.

Is it possible to fit smaller diameter wheels - say from a polo- to reduce hight of front, or is ther a temp way of lowering the van??

Any ideas??
THANKS John

Maybe a crazy idea but a spare set of rims without tyres may be enough to get it in the garage, plus by putting the good set inside will lower it a little more.

Reversing in will help a bit too I expect, as there's less overhang at the back.

If you're really serious, put the front on a trolley jack, take the wheels off, drop it right down and winch it in from a stout timber across the door, if it's in the far end wall - or use powerbar on the rear hub nut to lever it forward, with someone on the handbrake, or if alone, have a lump of 4x2 handy (else you'll regret it) :!:

Don't put the wheels back on, else someone's bound to roll it back out - just to make a bit of room for 5 minutes

John,
Now that you have more time, have a look/think about removing the garage door. Those up and overs are in my experience quite easy to demount, and should give you the required extra headroom. Refitting with the van inside could be a little more difficult, but worth some thought perhaps?
