Possible that the heater control lever cables have come off/ jammed .You should get hot air to foot well and side vents as well.

Mark has a posh late van. We early van owners get only cold air out of the side vents (I never have them open) and warm air from the windscreen demist vents, little side window dash vents and footwell vents

1984 - is that not a crossover year? could be one of the odd ones that has some late and some early stuff...that said you should be able to direct the heat either upto the window or down to the floor, as said if our only getting the window then the cable is likely bet/broken/not connected

Now that is interesting. My 1995 SA only delivers cold air out of the side vents, warm air from others. So in this case it's the same as the 1986 caravelle. Maybe this is a feature of later hot climate vans i.e. they continued to fit the earlier type of heater to provide plenty of fresh air? The rotary controls of the SA (from an Audi 100) only allow warm air to screen, floor or high level vents with no blending unlike the usual T3 controls. Not as versatile really...

Mines May '85. I get hot air from all vents except sides.

The air I get is so hot that the second lever down lever is only across a little or I will fall asleep.

The heater in our '85 Caravelle is a furnace (DG powered) defo the best one for the winter.
If yours is rubbish and water cooled then check:
That the thermostat isn't failed open (does the engine it take ages to warm up/very poor mileage in cold weather?)
The heater valve is opening properly (slipped/unhooked/broken heater control wires or broken valve)
The cooling system is properly bled of air (no leaks/gurgling when starting up)
Don't know a thing about aircold...

nor do i , lucky i have a water cooled ...

will do some checks tommorow , all i can say is i have few niggles with heating :

1) temp gauge does not get out of the first little section , the other day i was stuck in traffic and it JUST got to the 2nd mark ...
2) very cold in camper

will check rad fan tommorow as well , as i just assumed the gauge/sender was a little duff
so will earth the sender wire tommorow as well.

I do - crickey they are cold in these temperatures, any warm air you get is chilled by the outside air so fast it's worthless! even with warm air on the windscreen the other morning my front window didn't defrost (that is ice not damp!), I had to for the first time revert back to petrol as it wouldn't run properly on gas due to the cold!.....on the way home tonight it was much better though both in heat and working on lpg

I have no idea how people put up with Aircooled beetles/vans in anything less than about 0 degrees as they just don't cut it! (beetles maybe a bit better as they have heater channels?!)
