fedex my redex!

Post by edoh »

mot in december - an occasional puff of white smoke from the exhaust - esp when starting up -
'excessive smoke' an mot failure?
what's the forum consensus on additives like 'redex' or 'smoke cure'?
worth a bash - or to be avoided?

all opinions welcome -

El Cheapo 2 stroke oil added will reduce the smoke (not instantly).

2 Stroke isn't a good idea.
All the MOT tester is interested in is that the emmisions fall below the maximum permitted levels for the engine type and year.
Adding 2 stroke will increase the emitted hydrocarbons.
Puff of smoke? burning oil? or excessively rich?

A recent oil change can help and make sure it has a good fast run prior to dropping it off for MOT.

I been running 2 stroke oil (not permanently) for over 5 years and 3 Abgassuntersüchungen (exhaust emission tests) without a problem.
It does reduce start up smoke when added to the tank - which is probably down to the cleaning properties of the oil.

My JX engined van has an integrated smoke screen feature. It's activated by depressing the accelerator pedal over 3/4. I occasionally use it to get rid of people who drive too close behind me.

So it goes...

Thus, the van failed MOT due to 'excessive smoke'. The tester added something he called 'stop smoke' into the fuel filter and it passed.

My van has a puff, sorry cloud of white smoke on start up, it goes off after a bit. I took it to the MOT station all warmed up, It passed it's MOT with no problem, clearly the emissions test was fine.
Good luck with yours.
