Who would do this?

We have a van here.
It has a rattle.
It has a recent engine, WBX.
We took the rocker covers off.
Everything inside was painted with silver paint like the outside of the engine!
Seems whoever does this "ReCon" builds the engine, leaves the rocker covers off then sprays the lot silver, rockers, rocker shafts, valve springs, the lot.
How gash is that?
Anyway, it had a knackered lifter.
Probably full of silver paint!
Just wondered if anyone could tell me who does this (on a PM if you prefer) so I can stay well clear of them!

VW Elite just spray the crankcase, I believe one colour per year .... our's is green

Silver spray makes things look dead shiny and new though.

Just for a minute I thought that was my van you were talking about Simon.

Then I realised my engine is covered in ancient oil gunk and is about as recent as a Phil Collins number one

Its not unknown for so called 'rebuilt' engines from dubious sources to be little more than a quick blow over with an aerosol to make everything look shiny and new. I know one thing, on a rebuild I am much more meticulous than some remanufacturers in the UK. Its really down to time and quality of parts admittedly. These days, I just don't have the keen spirit I once had for rebuilds. Thats being 50+ I guess.

I really can't work out how some "ReCon" engines are so cheap!
I often wondered how people like Vege did them for so little!
Mind you, I have pulled rebuilts apart and found threaded bar for head studs!!

Elite engines are so cheap cos all they do is re-assemble them from different engines and pait them a nice colour in my case it was silver.

Lesson learnt if its cheap its for a reason

I knew the history of our Elite engine .. it came from a very highly trusted source. It had had new pistons and barrels, supplied to Elite by the former owner, the heads were reconned. It was pre-set up by Elite's customer, fitted by me with help from a chum in lifting it in.

It was turn key and 2.5 years and about 50,000 miles later there's been nothing to report what-so-ever, which is why I have never thought twice about recommending them.

So? I'm confussed...a recon should be all of the above and more without having to rely on a previous owners generosity.
The reconditioning company should recondition the engine by definition....have I missed something here or are we saying you are only going to get a properly reconditioned engine if the engine goes to the reconditioners in a reconditioned condition
