He (or someone else selling the same thing) also does the market circuit. I've seen him at Cleethorpes and Ingoldmelles. Although I don't recall seeing him in the last couple of years. Although that could be more to do with me avoiding those particular markets.

Some years ago (late 80s I think), I remember seeing a guy at quite a few VW shows that would turn up with a paste table and a spark plug on a stand that would be busily crackling away with not one short spark but many - like a frankenstein lab and quite an impressive sight. It did demonstrate quite well the invention he was trying to market, namely an ignition system that would light the fuel perfectly every time. I have no idea what happened to him, or his gadget but its about the only thing I've seen in the last 20 years that actually seemed to have some merit. Just wish I'd bought it.

Anyone shed any light on that one? Who was that guy?

I can see the merit in a better spark although who knows what the life expectancy of a plug might be under those circumstances. In theory I guess thats the vague thinking behind the magic booster but my argument would be that its fitted in entirely the wrong place - better surely, integrated with ignition system directly. Three and four prong plugs materialised later on as a means (presumably) to increase spark reliability although I can't helkp feeling that the chap with the paste table had a nice bit of kit there. I know he developed it himself.

Well first time I saw him it was a standard spark plug and the arcs going on were both bright and numerous. certainly vastly different from the little blue spark you normally see across a plug. I think at that time it was designed for a points-based system but I imagine he's advanced things since then. He wasn't a young man and I presume he was living on the sales he made.

In theory if you're getting a nice bright consistent spark without misfires, then you should be saving some petrol/gas - at least enough over the course of a year to warrant having such a system. I think we can safely dismiss the 'Magic Booster' but I'm sure theres room for improvement with respect to the spark at the plugs, providing the cost doesn't exceed the potential gain - always the bottom line.

Well that's it , you've completely put me off the magic booster.

Just as well, I wouldn't have had enough space with the terminals for the battery desulphater and the electromagnets to smooth out the fuel flow

Never mind, I'll just have to fit the air swirler on the carb intake and the conical stainless exhaust pipe economiser instead


I remember the guy with the paste table and the scary ignition demo from over 20 years ago, can't be the same bloke, unless it also works for prolonging human life, or perhaps slowing down time

When I was looking for my van I viewed one that had one of those fitted - the guy went on about it at some length, and told me he'd fitted one to his car too, and his drag-engined splitty. I just smiled and backed away slowly...

Blimey, thats a blast from the past. I remember those - fitted to the centre ignition lead - red thing that looked like the bulb from a jumpy spider. No, definately not one of those.

The man with the table at Sandown park - was selling a wire that replaced the lead from the coil to the top of the distributor! - he had references! he had an assistant! blue sparks appeared to be much stronger than on ordinary leads! he demonstrated! They were only about 12 knacker - I brought one! Didn't seem to make any difference at all

in the dust gathering corner - there's the exercise cycle there's the weights there's the bread maker there's the 'magic lead'! ..................

It won't make much difference, bit like Iridium plugs, if your system generally runs ok. You only really notice the improvement when your ignition system is below par.
