identifying model

Post by Epiphone »

Hi people, after sometime searching through t'internet trying to identify the model of my van, im still not really sure which it is.
The VIN number says its a Camper (Vehicle Servies (VIN) = Z - 1980-91 Camper)
Engine Type = 2.1 l
The paperwork says its build year is 1989 too, but VIN number is giving letter L - 1990?

It has no camping setup, no cupboards or kitchen etc it has been either removed or it came as a bus but with a pop-top roof?
Bolt holes on the floor for the kitchen unit I assume. But no Ventilation holes ...on the side.

It has all of the following extras too:
  • Electric Mirrors
    Cruise Control
    Chrome Bumpers
    Chrome Trim
    Round Head lights
    Westfalia Towbar
Central locking in door, but wasnt connected??
    light above glovebox
Can you idenitfy the model?
I found an old Starter motor under the seats which has South Africa written on it too, I assume the original part.

find the white paper sticker under the steering about knee high on the bulhead cross member it will have all the information on, type, engine, gearbox, paint, interior and M codes which can all be determined. If it's right hand drive from UK market it is possible for your local vw dealer to get the build data for it from the vin but you have to ask real nice, and with that vin it's not a SA van

Have a look at your VIN again and run it through one of the online decoders, like this one http://www.dubnetworks.net/vw-vin-decoder.htm it should give you quite a bit of info.

I'm puzzled by
The VIN number says its a Camper (Vehicle Servies (VIN) = Z - 1980-91 Camper)
The letter Z was used as a filler in the VINs, rather than as a classification for camper.

:ok

It's obviously a South African death van.
The alternator is a givaway and the bolt holes held the gas cabinet, that's why there's no ventilator.
the Z is the logo of the secret service SA branch (pronouced 'zeecret')

hope that clears things up :ok

So found the M-Codes etc

Type - 255 LC2 (255 = Caravelle)
Eng code/Trans Code = SS AST
Paint/Interior - LB3V HH
Options -
BA3 -???
BU0 - ???
BU1 - ???
RB0 or D - Radio "Beta" with Screen Antenna
Z25 - Possible Extra Packet M Code (e.g. Z 20 = Basic Model Caravelle CL)
651 - Windows Lifter, Electrically Operated
657 - Servo Steering
681 - ???
685 - Bench Seat with Folding Backrest in Passenger Compartment - Front, 2 Persons (253-256)

but mine doesnt have electric windows, but does have some replacement material in a place where the switches could have been, so maybe theyve been removed

so there isnt a complete M-Code list?
