asda smart price oil

Post by clartsonly »

this is 20/50 I have been reading up a little about this, and it says it is better for older engines? has anyone got any input as to whether 20/50 oil is fine, better or just a waste of time and I should be putting the regular oil in instead?

As a mechanic working back in the mid 80's at a main VAG dealer, we were using Quantum Blue....Mineral based 15W/40 volkswagen oil.
In my opinion....20W/50 is too heavy for a 1.9 wasserboxer engine, even factoring in the high mileage.
I know it's becoming increasingly difficult to find but 15W/40 mineral based is still prefered..15W/40 semi synthetic next best...then 10W/40 if you have to.

Hi
I've been using 20/50 in my Aircooled VWs for years. I change the oil & filter every year and so far no detrimental effects or even rattly hydraulic tapppets.
If you can't weld it try bostic!!

That's what I use since GSF stopped stocking VW Qantum oil. :)

I would only use that muck as a flushing oil not for any sort of longer than a few hours use!!!! Ask LHD Rob about cheap oil and the effects/cost it was!

I fill my van with cooking oil. Came in handy when camping one day as we had forgotten cooking oil, so drained some off the engine and used that  Poured it back in after :D

VW main agents still stock Quantum Blue/Red/Silver (Petrol/Diesl/newer engines) I paid £8.61 plus vat only last week for a gallon of Quatum Blue mineral 15W/40 from my local VW parts dept (was trade).
But lets be honest here...cheepo oil changed on a regular basis is always going to be better than more expensive lube thats been forgotten.
Any lube..even the cheap stuff..is going to far exceed the specs as layed down by VW in the early 80's.

ONCE... I used cheap asda oil...

was ok till on the motorway then it got too hot and thin and lost a load of oil pressure. Now I only use decent stuff
