Noisy tyres

Has anyone any views on the quietest tyres for the front axle of my 1.6TD?
When I bought the bus I drove it from Glasgow to Surrey and do not remember the front axle being noisy. It was never a problem on my two previous T25s either. However since fitting some second hand alloys which came with Semperit 205s the road noise is unacceptable over 40mph.
I have been told that Michelins are some of the quietest but would welcome any thoughts before I buy new rubber

In the old days I used to run my camper on G800's which ran quiet, gripped like glue but were subject to rapid wear. These days I use deap tread commercial eight plys at less than £50 apeice. To be frank although I do find them noisy but a lot is to do with the road surface. BTW When you talk about the front axle I hope that is metaphoric as surely front axles are the reserve of busses like early transhites!

Yeah - definitely metaphoric. Too much time around buses - the big red ones!
I know the Goodyears you mention. Has em on my first T25 around 1994 and yes they did wear quickly! Mind you I used it drive it from Yorkshire to London and back each week and don't remember road noise being an issue. it was only a 1600D - I must have been mad!

Continental vanco's.. great grip and life..

What are the 205's like? could be hard or deformed, or if M+S type could be noisey.. (I have some Vredestein transport snows and they are nearly as bad as my knobbly MT's...)

MMmmm semperits, load of tosh them tyres. Continental vanco's are the way forward if you can get em in the right size. Trouble you'll have is getting a high enough load rating.

you should have ago of my doka if you think your tyres are noisy, mud tyres start to groul at you as you lift the cluch and they only get noisyer

Mmmm - hadn't thought about Continentals. my T5 Caravelle runs on them and thats quite quiet. Will try my supplier for Vancos

What size tyres ar they? 205/70r14? yes they can be a little difficult to find.. I dont thinc Vanco's are available in that size.. , although you could use 195r14's or the stock 185r14's on the alloys..
Maxxis do a 205/70r14 in a van rated tyre.. a couple of members have them and rate them... very sensible pricing too.

Khumo/Marshall 857 van tyres.. Aidan runs those as his all round tyres and even has been laning with them.. and really rates them

Its running on Semperit 205/70R14 97 load rating if i am reading it right
Continental do the Vanco in 185/14 with a 100/102 load rating for around 62 quid. Presumably this is high enough load rating

Thought I might go to 185/14 as the narrower tyres should help with steering in tight spots - no power steering you see!

185s are the std fit in any case.. 205/70's were an option on the 6" steel rims or the alloys.. Correct pressures help, as does correct front suspension settings..

khumo/marshall 857 are noisier than vancos, noticeably so as they age, and not as good in the wet ime, but half the price and good wear rate
