castle nut thingy area :-)
right guys, since ive put me merc wheel kit on Ive had problems when turning right (making a very nasty rubbing noise which i believe is the drum rubbing on the housing) its got progressively worse now.
First time it happened i was able to stop the noise by tightening the castle nut back up but now the rubbing is back with a vengeance so i thought simple fix, re-tighten the castle nut back up, but ive discovered the castle nut thread and the end if the drive shaft threads are well worn now and therefore im unable to tighten the wheel hub up tight ,therefore making it impossible to stop the noise.
The wheel rocks in and out quite a lot now as im estimating there is a good 1mm gap between castle but and wheel hub,and if i try to tighten the nut it'll just go back tot he position of the split pin
i guess me question is how easy is it gonna be to replace the drive shaft at the end, how far would i have to take it back or is there another fix to this?
thanks

i think you need help fella. take it to a mechanic before the wheel comes of at speed and kills you. might just need a new nut on there. what are you tightening it with by the way cos i'll wager you're not getting it tight enough it takes a couple of fat blokes on a 5 foot bar to tighten them properly.

i would be wary of driving it at all ,untill you had a go at getting the castle nut as tight as possible and that means swinging on a bar with you feet off the floor.......if it spins round then you need to check what thread has gone and if its the nut get a new one before taking it anywhere.

Re: castle nut thingy area :-)
im tightening the castle nut up, but the thread has deteriorated on the end of the shaft and in the actual nut so it cant be tightened properly anyway and slips back to the split pin i think. does the castle nut hav to be super tight, is the split pin a safety measure in case it comes lose? also when i was able to tighten it the noise would stop so i dont think its the bearings? or i could be wrong . . .

you need a new stub axle.and i recommend you dont drive your van till its sorted.
but the thread has deteriorated on the end of the shaft

Re: castle nut thingy area :-)
the split pin is only to stop the nut coming undone,if its jumping threads the split pin will just shear off due to the weight of the van. make sure its not just the nut, simon from brickwerks sells them if it is,not too much money.but if its jumping threads then DONT drive it mate

an advert in the wanted section can be worth the effort too.

Re: castle nut thingy area :-)
if it 'just' came loose and it wasn't taken off to put the merc alloys on , then chances are the bearings
maybe time to take it to a garage

i did take of the wheel hub to replace the original studs pins with much longer ones, the original nuts where siezed and we needed to use the acetylene to get nuts off lol . . .
