Tyre pressue in simple terms!

Post by vdubstar »

I have a 1981 lpg Aircooled 2 ltre HIGHTOP and am just trying to find what tyre pressure to put in my standard tyres as i always guess! jst thought i'd ask if anyone new of what they put in loaded/unloaded, mine only has part interer at the moment not that i think that makes much a big deal with all the stuff i chuck in! It has bars rating but my pump don't work in bars it works in like 30 or 40 or 55 etc! plus the bar rating was before th hightop was put on i think....... cheers for your pressures tho....

Thats interesting KEV as my handbook quotes 185- R14C at 2.5 Bar front and rear for Ambulance and all other models 3.0 Bar Front and 3.7 Bar rear which is a lot higher than the Wiki. Have I been over- inflating my boots?

35psi to 50 psi is big differnce in the front! Lol i agree the back with engine should have a lot more n 30 something is what i put in my golf so i'd expect more...

I'll check them and head towards a pressure of 50 then.....? ine are R14s too not car ones van ones i remember that when i renued all of them! thanks for all your help x

there seems to be a lot of debate over this.. the PO of my camper basically told me to ignore the pressures on the sticker inside the van and stick with those quoted on the wiki... what are the dangers of being too low/too high, and what should you base your decision on??!!

My sticker quotes 38 front/55 rear for 185R14C (1982 a/c) and I've had no trouble.

I run 50 front, 55 rear. IMHO lower pressure is softer ride, but not as stable.

Reason I run 50 front is front is heavy with all the extras camper carries... and it's a hightop so extra storage top front too. Running tires at higher pressure means they flex less and therefore less roll when cornering.

Hi everyone,

From my VW tyre pressures sticker on the front N/S door pillar, they state the following for 185R14C tyres:-

Front: 38 psi

Rear: 55 psi

Just to update, My sticker says same as everyone else They tyre guy worked out my bar rating for me! 38 in front etc however due to hightop and stuff in front he also recommends (for better fuel usuage aswell as handleling in corners) 45 front 55 back! SO YET another reading! i suppose its int he middle somewhere so no less than 38 and no more than 50 down to personal choice i supose, 45 in front felt nice actually felt a few bumps but easier round corners!

so i have 45 Front 55 Back ...

Thanks for all your help x

Stick with VW's label settings....T25's are all based on the Transporter chassis and as such these pressures will have been worked out on average loads the Van would have been likely to carry.

Even if the hightop was added later on and wasn't standard?

Having higher tyre pressures on the front could also seriously detriment your van's handling and in some cases could make it dangerous to drive.

Volkspares had dangerously overinflated the front tyres on my mexican beetle to 30 psi (I don't use them anymore since they are so incompetent) and it felt like I was driving on an ice rink !! The correct tyre pressure for the front tyres on all Beetles (eg. what they should have been) is 18 psi.
