Snow / winter tyres - which ones?

I suppose the Nordic Countries like Sweden and Norway and Finland now a thing or two about driving in the snow. this is shown by the number of WRC driver world champions and Formula One world champions that these countries have. Those countries seemed to choose the 2.1 over the diesel a lot of the time. Then I suppose that if the diesel helps you drive properly, they dont need it because of there skill level. A bad workman blames his tools I suppose. The Finnish just use Nokian Hakkepelitta C2's, as do the Americans. Diesels also dont like it very cold, you show me the snowy road with a blockage of petrols holding up the diesels.

I read that the 2.1 has the most availabe tq and hp in real terms than diesels cantt remember where it was but it was an interesting online article.. I may plump for some vrestaesrfhfdjf or hwever you say it comtrac? winter tyres..

Thats on the busman website, and is talking about the standard engines, but include the T5 174. iirc

The Nokian tyres are excellent everywhere, but are a around 95 quid each last time I had to buy one.

I would be very surprised if they used a petrol, but back in the late 80's and early 90's the other VW option was the low power diesel, plus the temperature must come into it. The defenders can now come with a kit to keep the diesel warm, and heat the supply pipes. Times have moved on and the modern diesel is an effective bit of kit. The dura-torque f ord defender engine is very nice, and the 6 speed gearbox excellent.
Mind you the south african bmw 6 cylinder petrol defender is in my books one of the best engines they have put in a landrover.

This is American site, but tester is Swedish Road and Transport Institute.

Test drove them on racetrack on ice and were fantastic.. only heavily studded tires are better, but noisier too.

Have read they are used alot in Iceland and Scandinavian countries. Maybe some members there could give us some info on them.

I have Hankook W400 fitted on standard steels at the moment.

They worked out at about 85 yoyos a corner fitted.

They do not feel vague in the wet, do not make much more tyre noise.

They are slightly larger in diameter (speedo reads 5 km less) and have good wear capabilities.
