84 Tyre Load Rating....Good or Bad?

Hi guys/girls,

Can somebody help please?

I had a set of 205/45/R17 84W Bridgestone tyres fitted on my JK wheels last weekend.

I asked for a miniumum load rating of 97 before the tyres were fitted, so wasn't impressed when I discovered a lower load rating tyre of 84 had been fitted

The guys that fitted the tyres are now saying that they are struggling to find the size of tyre I need with the load rating that I've asked for.

As far as I'm aware, I need this size tyre to keep gearing and rolling road correct, and a load rating of 97 in order to carry the weight of my van, which is a 1990 Caravelle..

I suppose the question I need answered if possible is, will an 84 load rating tyre be safe to fit on my van? (I guess not) Or are they likely to go pop? (I guess yes) And if anybody knows where I can get 97's from, I'll buy you an easter egg

84 load rating equates to a tyre designed to carry a max load of 500kg.
The gross weight of your van is probably 2400kg, so 84 rated tyres are not good enough.
Over loaded tyres over heat, then degrade and fail resulting in blowouts and crashes.
Your insurance could well be void and you commit construction and use offences in relation to use of unsutable type of tyres, possibly even using a vehicle in a dangerous condition, thats before considering compensation for anyone injured as a result.
I would take them back they are not sutable for your vehcile. Anyone who supplies tyres should know better.

A 205/45 17 is too small.. thats 35mm less diameter than the 185r14 that is the standard size.. or nearly 6% in speed
you would need a 245/45 (too wide in any case..)
or 225/50
or 215/50
or prob the best compromise a 205/55

I dont know if any of them are available in the right load...
the tyre people ought to have been able to tell you what size you needed though..

There are a lot of users out there basically driving their vans on car tyres.
The original 185R14C's are 100/101 rated commercial and generally it considered that you need to be looking at a rating over 94 to be safe but even they are on the limit for maximum laden weight.
It's a dificult one.

Possibly a 215/50, they seem to be available in a 95

you could ask your insurance co, you will have to tell them that you have fitted the alloys... but in anycase you should be using the right load rating for the rated axle loads.... so its possible to use a slightly lower load rating on the front..

But... if its a full on camper.. its pretty close to its 2300-2400 kgs gross weight when you pack a few bits in..

nexan make load rated tyres in silly sizes ask them to see if theycan get them!

I have 225/45/17 on front of mine 94 load rating, Needs to be minum 92 on front.

Many thanks for all your advice guys.

I guess I should point out that I've not yet fitted the wheels to the van, and I won't be until I've got the correct tyres fitted.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, the people that fitted the tyres should know what size/load rating etc to fit - apparantly, 'their the boys to trust' if that gives you any clues as to who fitted them, and they wern't very 'quick' to 'fit' them either.

I'm not impressed with this poor quality of service from people who really should know better - it seems that I'm doing the running around to find tyres instead of them pulling their fingers out and getting the job sorted.

I can see me asking for a refund and going else where. Not happy!
