where to get new pop top canvas?

Post by purplecrocs »

Hi... I have just bought my first camper! Its a Westfalia pop top. The canvas needs replacing, being new to all this the only place I know of is Just Kampers - is this the best place to get one from? Link below, what are those cream toggles for? Also, if anyone has bought this, does it come with instructions and how easy/hard is it to do?!

Interesting (especially for the wife!) have you got one of these fitted, got a picture? What's it like being PVC rather than canvas?

Original quality ones from Peter Gunzl, Germany who is "Mr Westy", has most of the original Westfalia parts from the factory, and soruces / has made stuff that`s obsolete. Easy to order and pay, they speak English on the fone or via email, and fast delivery. (they supply a lot of the OE stuff to American specialists)

Gunzl will be at Vanfest, if you wanted a canvas bringing over I`d contact them asap (presuming you`re going to Vanfest, or know someone who is?)

Aftermarket good quality canvas from GoWesty (USA) including rot-proof sailcloth type stuff

Keep it real.

Just had a look on the vwbusshop website, looks like theyre £300 with our great exchange rate. Thats twice the price of the JK ones - are they much better do you think - do you have one fitted?

Also, on a side note it seams there are 2 versions on that website, an 80-85 one and an 86 on one... my van was registered in 86 but after looking at the VIN it seems its an 84 build, so would i assume the one i'd need to be the 80-85 one?

You get what you pay form IMO. Earlier canvas was stapled to wooden strips, later ones have alloy clamping strips and screws. Age depends on the Westfalia conversion date, not when VW built the `van, which could have been loitering at the factory waiting it`s turn.
Keep it real.
