Anyone wired up a PC in their van?

intresting tread but i did it the lazy way, use my lappy loaded with mp3s films etc plug it in with the mains adapter (i can see the heads shaking now) to the inverter (2 leisure batteries and 60w solar panal) then i bought one of those cheapo cassette adaptor things (pound shop) so i plug laptop sound thru the alpine radio so sound is awesome, got an plug in internet dongle jobby, ran it for a week whist camping and didnt come near to flattening the batteries so works for me. as for sat nav i just use a normal sat nav

I agree. I run run DVDs through a lap top. I have a sound adaptor which fits into the old tape deck thereby linking the lap top into my van's sound system. The surround sound effect is mindblowing. It is like being in your own cinema, but the effect is much much better.

We run a high spec MacMini at home that has all our DVDs and about 600+ music cd's ripped - replaced the TV with it last year. I have seen somewhere on the web where someone rigged one of these into the glove box of their car and set up a mini lcd screen as a head unit.

You could get an older spec mac mini on fleabay fairly cheap and they are incredibly quiet - dunno about power consumption though but must be dc as there is a power adaptor on the back.

I have an Elitegroup MD100 small form facto pc that I was going to install as a in-bus pc.
It's about the size of a large book, has a 500gb hdd and mint linux light.
With the correct DC/DC converter it will be a good set-up-

yea , 3g would be perfect , has everything you need ,satnav , ability to play dvd's , watch iplayer etc...

if i ever get a van , i will be taking our ipad with us

I agree it will be just as useful as an ipad is - and obviously it will be required to be hooked up to the stereo etc. However, i think it misses the point.

For example, in car pc should have lots of geeky stuff that cost loads and takes ages to get working properly. When you've done it you're practically a moderator on some forum that dedicates its time to it .

anything is possible , i have written a few ipad/iphone apps and its defo possible. we could even have our own 80-90 app
