Bike rack for Westfalia tow bar

Post by purplecrocs »

Does anybody have any experience of using a tow bar mounted bike rack on the standard Westy fitted tow bar?

I need one to carry 4 bikes, i've seen a few brands around … Halfords, Thule, Maxxraxx, Exodus… does anybody have any experience of any of these?

Many thanks

I had a Thule rack that clamped to a swan-neck towbar. Worked well, but I was always sceptical of how secure it was, compared to mounting it on a two-bolt bar.

Don't rule out a tail-gate mount one, either.

A fiamma tailgate bike rack would be better
IMHO the clamps do not inspire confidence..as Adrian suggests

The Paulchen ones can hold up to 4 bicycles - they appear from time to time on eBay, or post something in the Wanted.

thanks for this … reason i was looking at the tow bar job was everywhere i've looked at the Fiammas says it takes 2 bikes with the option to add an extension to carry 3 … eg here http://www.fiammastore.com/Fiamma-Carry ... -VW-T3-T25.

You seem to have 4….?!

confused….

The bottom part of the rack is from a T4 :)

I'd be a bit wary about the longevity of a Fiamma regularly used to carry four, or over rough ground. Our Fiamma (racks for two bikes, albeit bought used) has started to stretch and expand so that it doesn't fit snugly onto the bottom of the tailgate any more.
