I suspect it's the condition of the hinges that is at the heart of this. My Cumbrian trip one of the hinges popped its rivets, even though we dropped it when winds got a little high.

I was concerned the canvass could rip or separate from the frame. We left it up in 25mph winds yesterday until bed time and it was ok. It's is certainly warmer with it down though.

Very true. We've on been using it whilst cooking etc, but dropping it when we go to bed. The wind noise keeps me awake as I'm waiting to leap up and grab it if it separates.

Even at the foot of Ben Nevis last night, it was comfortable ( but wet) and with the pop top down we didn't need the Eber overnight either.

He mentions that you need a full roof rack to be able to close the pop top with the HD ones fitted.
What do you think?

when there is nothing on the roof, you can still pull it down but if you let go it rises back up, not uncontrollably. just a matter of holding on to the H bar while you check the tent isn't caught in anything.

Been there ^^ seen it done it lol.....very embarrassing

I'm incline to agree that with the addition of a thermal wrap they will withstand most storms without issue, park with the wind coming at the ASS. However, what we find is, the noise and draft reaches a point at which we put the poptop down..certainly more than 25mph....probably at 45/50mph gusts or over.

Easily done, I had a sign made up for the dash after I nearly left a car park with it up!:

We stayed next the the sea on the south coast, New Years Eve. The wife and I slept in the roof as the kids sleep downstairs. According to the weather report there were gusts up to 60mph. It was noisy and at times it felt like someone was rocking the van! The original canvas held together! :ok

We dropped the roof once we were out of bed.
