Westy roof rack brackets on a Reimo???

Post by moonshine »

Moments before taking the plunge and ordering a set of westy roof rack brackets from Gunzl, and had a thought, we have a Reimo pop top, and looking at various pictures of the westy brackets they seem to have a horizontal crease to hug the lip, midway up the pop top. I imagine it would be highly unlikely that the Reimo pop top lip (yes it does have one) is in the same place?

Does anyone have approximate dimensions from gutter surface to westy pop top horizontal lip please so I can compare to ours?

We want to carry a 16ft canadian canoe and it ain't exactly lightweight! Bonus of the Reimo roof is it already has gas struts!

cheers

Not sure if you took the plunge with this, but one of the common ways to attach a gutter mount rack to a westy roof in the states (where they can't easily/cheaply buy from Gunzl) is to use Thule 542 artificial gutter mounts. They won't transfer the weight into the van gutter when the roof is down, but a lot of people happily carry canoes on their westy poptops with this option...

Took the plunge but found a cheap homebrew stainless steel thing! Does the job for now at least!

Here is one for people who are looking at buying some roof rack brackets.

Just incase anyone else is looking for them, http://campervanculture.com/shop/pair-o ... -brackets/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They are really heavy duty and 40mm shorter than the originals. The reason we did this is because the original ones stick your roof bars miles to high in the air, especially if you fit a roof basket or top box on the bars. Unlike the others that are for sale ours have holes in that match up exactly with the original holes so you dont have to drill extra holes in the area causing a weak point on the roof and is perfect if you have the origionals and want to upgrade to the shorter type. We didnt go with stainless as we dont like the look of it as most Westys are black and white not black and stainless and we had them treated and blackened rather than powder coating as powder coating is shocking outside and only lasts a year. Ours are also lazar cut not bent and drilled but they had to be really because of the superior design of them.

Spot what one is ours and what one is the original :lol:

The reason we went so thick is because we found the roof bar feet couldnt grip the top of the bracket enough because it was so thin and the feet used to move around. Even if you brushed up against fluffy pine tree branches it used to remove your roof rack fairly easy and we got fed up with it over the years and developed our own and now we just did a batch to sell.

We do them in a pair as I know some people like to fit 6 for kayaks etc.

Hope this helps.
