Pop up awning discounts at Decathlon

Post by jiffies »

Thought this might be of interest:
We use a Quecheu pop up awning (Base XL) & it works a treat. Takes 5 mins tops to put it up & half the weight of the old skool canvas ones. Decathlon have a sale on at the moment with some good discount on both the Base XL & Base seconds. You can also add the smaller 2man pod tents to any of the doors.

Hi Jiffies,

We are looking for a new light and quick awning so I was interested. But 10 minutes on that site and after trying "awning" and "BASE XL" in the websites search box the only awning I could find was little one man fishing shelter

Is it me being thick or is it hard to find ?

An image of Jew~lee being swallowed up by her 'pop-up' tent at Bashtie last year has embedded itself in my mind now :rofl :pimp

I think it's you, John. The link in the post takes you straight to 'em.

Not sure they're great as an awning - they're not vertically-sided, so they won't meet up to the slider - which means you're going to get wet between van and awning in the rain. And isn't that the whole point of an awning? To have some dry outside space in the wet?

We found the £25 Tarp (or seven) works well as a quick and pikey sunshade coming off the van. Bit of a PITA to put up, but solid once up - and you can daisy-chain 'em into TarpCity/TarpTopia when you're camping with a bunch of mates.

Ah, that explains it Adrian, I was expecting to see more conventional "camper van" awnings ;)

We have a viking roof that overhangs the sliding door by about a foot. The awning sits nicely underneath this. Admittedly its not as watertight as the awnings that fit to the gutter rail. But unless the rain is horizontal we dont find it an issue, just close the door. All down to personal preference, this is the compromise between the modern lightweight awning & 5min erection time!
The photos not great as it doesnt show the angle adjacent to the van, but you get the idea

Very good Mr Hulley! ok so its almost an awning!!!
I was going to get a local sailmaker to attach some extra fabric so it would fit to the gutter rail but decided it wasnt necessary.
Cheers all

love how the prices have rocketed - we bought our Base Seconds about 2 years ago new, from Decathlon reduced from £60 - £40...the same one now costs £130. Even a week after we bought ours they were selling on ebay for close to £100 second hand. We also picked up the inner tent last spring for £20

its been perfect for an awning especially when its just for a night, we still have a drive away for longer stays.

Good to read these posts and see the photo. We have a pop up base seconds, bought to use as a kitchen tent for camping, and I'm going to try it this year as an 'awning' for the van, and use a tarp between the van and tent for shelter. Bit of a faff, bit easier to put up than the frame drive away awning we have got. :ok

We have one of these... Not used it in anger yet but got fed up of putting the awning up after three attempts; the thought of putting it up in 40+ degree heat in the South of France was not good! For us with three kids waiting in the van the need is to get something up quickly. It also means we can expand out wards for sleeping etc if the van gets too hot.

Will post pictures when we use it... Hopefully over Easter hols after the van gets gassed :D
