Caravelle 7 seater coversion.

Post by TomDub85 »

Hi going to view a Caravelle 7 seater my partner seen on side road the owner is looking for around £3000 for it and we would like to buy with the intention of kitting out ready for summer. Rock and Roll bed sink cooker table ect. We have the idea we could do this for under £700 are we crazy ?

Also changing the paper work from 7 seater to campervan easy ?

Any help would be great Thanks Tom

If you are quite handy, doing it yourself and building your own units then you could do it for £700 depending on how far you want to take it. The most expensive bits would be the rock n roll bed and fridge. If you can source most of your parts second hand then you're in with a shout. But beware, it can get expensive once you start factoring in leisure batteries, heaters etc.

There are lots of rules and regs to meet to legally register a van as a camper. Here's a good place to start. http://www.campervanlife.com/building/legal Personally I wouldn't (and didn't) bother. As long as you make sure your insurance covers you for any modifications.

Here's my meagre attemp at a home build (none VW) which I would say probably cost me around £500, but I went with a fixed seating arrangement because there's only 2 of us so had no need for rear seats / rock n roll bed, and I already had the fridge and a few other bits.

I've got a Syncro Caravelle which is going to end up as a 'part time' camper. I've replaced the rear bench with a proper Caravelle folding bed, but I hope to retain the middle seats, and use it as a bus most of the time. When required, the seats will either slide right out, or just across towards the door, allowing the fitting of a removable kitchen unit behind the drivers seat. I'm getting there slowly, but doing it all for £700 might be a bit ambitious. Depends how handy you are, I suppose, and how much time you spend on ebay.

Yeh fingers crossed i,m off work next few days so having a good look and trying to view as many as time allows me. Trying to keep away from the Ebay auctions and the temptation of bidding on something i have not viewed.

its an 82 not 92

lots of non available body / mechanical parts.

1.6d - you will want to change the engine once you have driven it , this will also mean a gearbox change. so allow £2000+ onto the price

the 1.6d as standard is designed to do 50mph - and thats as a van!

add any other issues , body work ect
