1000w inverters?

Post by jed the spread »

ive seen these 1000w inverters and im interested.im getting ideas for the conversion of my caravelle and am thinking of poping a microwave in there.
so with these inverters do you just need a huge leasure 12 volt set up because it such high watts or do you just keep the engine running while you use it?
also is it just a case of pluging it into the fag lighter? :?

The current draw will be huge on this I havn't looked up the figures for the 1000w version but my 300w can pull 10A out the battery under full load.

Also check the input current of your microwave, it's probably higher than 1000w (I'm talking about what it draws not the 'cooking power' of 800w or so)

Oh and no this one won't plug into the lighter, it will need to be wired directly.

OK had a quick look at maplin, the spec for theirs is 35A for the full 1000w (oh and it connects with something that looks like a set of jump leads)

ive seen one in a caravan shop and it was masive.it wouldnt go under the passenger seat.
sorry for being stupid guys but all the talk of amps and stuff is going right over my head.

Ever have one of those days?

Yes a read the spec sheet and didn't engage my brain, the spec lists the current at a 30% duty cycle doh

stevel is quite right, the input current will be MUCH higher than I suggest, given even a modified sine wave inverter with about 95% efficiancy your going to be right up in the 100 amp range and the chances are 1000w still isn't enough to cover the input current of your microwave.

Glad someone was awake this morning, shame it wasn't me :)

Errr perhaps my grasp of simple arithmetic has gone away...but 35A at 12V is only 420W IN. Likewise 10A is only 120W IN. I wonder how these inverters manage to put out nearly 3 times as much power as they take in. It must be magic

To get a true 1000W at 12V out you need about 95A in....and really heavy wires.
