Please help. No spark and going to France next Saturday!!

Post by paulandchez »

I'm still not able to start my van. This all started one morning last week when it just wouldn't fire up. Starter turns, fuel is delivered but no spark so no start. Things I've done so far:
Checked HT leads....although no spark even at king lead
Changed coil for new Bosch one....still no change
Recently fitted new starter due to old one slipping....but been running fine for 3 weeks
Changed 2 large cables from alternator to starter as these looked knackered, and plugged each wire direct into alternator as the moulded plug was looking way past it
Measured voltage at starter....12.7v at battery connection, 10.3v at solenoid whilst cranking
Also, the oil and ignition lights don't come on when you turn on the ignition.

I'm now stuck as my little knowledge has been exhausted!!!

Any help would be appreciated :ok

Thanks

Paul

Have you got 12v at the black cable to terminal 15 of the coil with the ignition switched on and when cranking the engine.

Think I got that right. Shoved a wire into the centre slot on the connector from the hall unit at the dizzy end, held king lead near earth (dizzy end) and with just ignition on, not cranking, scraped wire on block....nothing. With ignition still on, shoved multimeter leads into 2 outside slots of same connector and got nothing. Does this mean hall unit is gone?

Thanks for help so far mate

No
If the hall unit had gone you would have got spark the problem is around the amplifier.

As you you have now power on the outside pins then check the brown earth wire from the amplifier is connected to the engine block (it usually connects to a tag on the distributor mounting bolt) and the black wire from the amplifier is connected to the terminal 15 on the coil.

Are the wires to the idling stabiliser connected?

Try it with the idling stabiliser unpluged and the plugs joined together.

Right back now. As you can see, the earth is connected to the dizzy clamp, and you can see the extra red cable I've added to link the earth back to the tinware where the coil is currently. I added this just to try and make better earths. The tinware is then attached to the body.

The black wire is connected to the +15 on the coil along with a green/black wire, both do which come out of the plastic junction box near the rear of the bay.
Did the test again with the idle stab cables connected together and got same result

Next you need to check the amplifier plug wiring. Remove the plug from the amp switch the ignition on and check power at the pins. Pin are numbered right to left. Pin one right hand side of the plug.
Pin 1 green should read 12v
Pin 4 should read 12v

Set your multimeter to ohms
And take readings between these points
All readings should be near 0 Ohms
Pin 2 brown to earth
Pin 3 brown/white to brown/white on distributor plug
Pin 5 Red/white to red/white on distributor plug
Pin 6 Green/white to green white on distributor plug

If they all check out then it is a faulty amplifier.
One final check just to make sure it is not the coil even though it is new. With everything reconnected use a 12v bulb test lamp between terminal one on the coil and earth crank the engine if the light does not flash then that confirms the amplifier.

Ok I get12v at 1
Nothing at 4

About 2 ohms at 2
All the rest are open circuit.

Just to double check, you did mean this plug below, and I reconnected the dizzy plug first too

Just knocked up a couple of leads and only bulb I had was an interior cab bulb, but with ignition on it was lit, and cracking didn't change that. It stayed lit constantly

All plugs are connected as normal except the idle stabs are plugged together

No power to pin 4 is your problem, check the black wire from pin 4 is connected directly to terminal 15 on the coil that is the wire that powers the amplifier.
