syncro fuel tank sender connector

Post by tee3peeo »

My fuel tank sender connector has given up the ghost. I pulled back the rubber boot top of the connector on the n/s of the tank. Looking into the white plastic lower section It has one bright brass terminal and one stunted rusty stump. I'm guessing this is the problem. Can this connector be repaired without replacing the entire sender unit? Has anyone tackled it? I notice that Brickwerks do list a part

http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/t ... r-kit.html

But - it's out of stock at the moment - does anyone else supply this?

Or should I just accept that I have to change the whole thing?

advice/guidance gratefully received,

cheers
Zeb

Your sender connection sounds in a similar state to mine currently. What I did was leave the one good connection, and make the other one, which is the 'negative' side, to the metalwork of the sender via one of the mounting studs which was just long enoughto get a ring-terminal on. I've got a new sender to go in, at some point..

Ok thanks Syncroandy that sounds like a cunning plan. Just for clarity please, which part did you attach the ring terminal to? Did you liberate the wire from the top section with the rubber boot and earth to the circular plate of the sender unit? Or, break open the lower section with the corroded stump and manage to find enough cable below this to work with - I'm really hoping its the first one...
many thanks tee3peeo

Aye. Nice pic BTW ! The rusty stump is formed from a bit of the metal plate bent during manufacture and cunningly moulded into the connector, the brownish wire goes to this. As a workaround, extract the brown wire from as close to the end as you can, and reattach this using a ring terminal to one of the retaining studs, if there's one with enough thread left to get a decent contact.. It's only a temporary bodge really.

I had a similar issue. Whilst I had the tank tank out I cut the plastic back around the terminals and soldered wires directly to them. I covered with some PU adhesive to make water tight. The gauge was really accurate afterwards.
