Fitting a new 025905205af distributor - rotor arm alignment?

Hi Chaps,
Maybe an easy one for you guys due to my newbiness & lack of experience, I've seen some hits online about ftting new bosch distributors being aligned to piston no #2 ? as opposed to my old one to no #1 ?
and wondered what to do in this case?
My 1987 2.1 petrol with the DJ engine code (This engine was taken from a 1990 model) was previously converted from a 1.9 petrol after it blew up years ago -
Last night I swapped the new distributor into the old ones position (which had a very badly warn rotor arm & has 2 vacuum connectors but only 1 is connected to the carb) & once the new distributors drive peg engaged into the recess (in the right orientation, leaving the car in gear!) ... when I pushed on the rotor arm I noticed it is pointing to a different position as compared to the old one (from the photo I took of my old distributor) ... is that because the new distrib is aligned to piston #2 ?!?
What do I now need to do?, before even attempting to fire the engine up - from the haynes manual it says remove plug #1 & turn the engine until you feel compression in piston#1 and re-align to the pulley marker (outer U notch?); do I need to do the same BUT for piston #2 !?! ... I didn't forsee it being that much hassle in line with JK's comments just plug + go (expecting it to align in exactly the same posn) when I purchased it
Is it worth me leaving this to my local garage since I haven't got a strobe do you reckon?
I can always re-fit the old one.... btw I haven't snipped the existing ignition connector wires (semi-circular ended plug) and changed these to the junior power timer plugs (rectangular plug) yet! ...
Any advice appreciated!
Thanks
Rich.
