Sterling Charger - Why?

Post by nobbyfox »

Still contemplating my fridge options.
One question is why would you fit a sterling charger? They do seem expensive for what they do. Can you not just use the alternator to charge your batteries with a suitable intelligent relay?

Thanks

The simple answer to "why" is that they do a better and faster job of charging your leisure battery.

I've been using the lowly alternator and simple split relay for 10 years without a problem.
I now have an intelligent relay to fit but it's on the todo list.

The Sterling "manages" the charge coming from the alternator, by varying the "feedback" it gets to increase the charge, so it should recharge a discharged battery more quickly. Ideal if you've got a big bank of leisure and aren't driving very far between camping spots.

I should add that like "Titus A Duxass" I don't use one either, but as said, if you need one they are a good thing.

Thanks all for the replies.
I only have a 85ah leisure battery and use the van most days anyway. Our drive to our camping trips usually take a few hours as well so leisure battery well looked after. Don't think I need a Sterling at the moment then.
Thanks anyway
