causes of weak spark ?

Post by banjax34 »

1983 holdsworth villa 2 litre air cooled petrol....drove from london to cromer at weekend, stopped at campsite signed in, came out van wouldn't start, distributer cap was changed last year and wasn't worn, looked like weak spark so changed ignition coil ( had new spare) fired up, parked up and 5 days later left, van ran so much better on way home, actually pulled up hills rather than slow down, but on checking again spark still looks orange rather than blue, should i be looking at changing the ignition control unit also ? i would like to get on top of ignition side after the difference it made changing the coil, does the hall sender work or not work or can it give a weak spark ?any advice appreciated, cheers ,martin

No the hall sender won't cause a weak spark all it does is send a signal to the ignition control unit when to fire the spark.
First check the earth for the ICU near the distributor has a good connection to the engine block. The ICU uses that earth to switch the coil.
