Speedo and odo just dropped out

Post by jamesandtheopenroad »

Hey. So my speedo and odo have just dropped out whilst on the m-way. I've checked the circlip at the wheel end - fine, and the connection at the speedo end - fine also. Haven't got my Haynes with me so wondered if anyone had any ideas? Are there any electrical things ie fuses or is it all mechanical? Thanks in advance.

All mechanical and a very common fault I'm afraid. 25+ years ago the gear was pressed onto the shaft (interference fit) 25+ years later the nylon gear has hardened and deteriorated and suddenly develops a hailine crack...it no longer grips the shaft, rather, the lineal force of the gear driving pushes the whole pivot pin sideways until it drops out of its mounts.
Many have tried a spot of supaglue, which may give you a month or three....I think Andy at Campershack fixes them by crimping the ends..perhaps if you give him a bell?

Thanks Martin. So is it the cable that's bust or the actual speedo itself?

From how you describe it the speedo is still working? but the trip has gone ti..ts up? as I said ^^^^ part of the trip mechanism (the drive gear) has broken allowing the supporting shaft to fall out of it's pivots.....speedo head fault.

Nah, it's both - speedo and odo.

My apologies ...not reading your first post properly.....it was with you saying 'something had dropped out' that threw me lol.

So if you turn the cable at the wheel does it turn at the speedo head?

The cable might be snapped half way!
When you checked the circlip did you have a close look at the cap? it isn't unheard of for the speedo cable to wear the hole in the grease cap ROUND.
Yes...all mechanical.
