The LEDs can be dimmed using the remote. I dimmed them about half way through the video. The blue set dimmed is like a night light.

Is that supposed to be video? I'll have to check it out on the comp.

@ Mitch re "U" shaped diffuser / trim to cover the LED "strip" = Your B&Q idea sounds good, I will check it out (and post a pic of the installation if / when I use that :)

I think would also need a controller box to make best use of them.

The controller box is no problem I can knock one up.
I need to do some experimentation with maximum lengths, I have a 5 metre run and would like to extend it to 8 metres but I don't know if it would be too much for the controller.

Just a random thought, but would these be able to run off 5v or is that just not high enough?

Not enough, why 5V though ?

Depends, if the LEDs have resistor incorporated then no - which I suspect is the case with these flexi-strips.
If the LEDs have no resistors and rely on a controlled power supply then yes, if you have a 1.8 volt difference across the LED it will glow.

I was just thinking for around/behind my tv at home.
There is a USB socket on the back of the tv which powers up when the tv is turned on. And I think USB sockets are 5V.

Though looking on ebay they have exactly what I was thinking anyway

That one looks like it has some resistors on board (small black SMD jobbies).

The pack I bought had two 5 metre strips & two connectors on the control box so that's how I plugged it in. in the van. I did daisy chain both strips together and hooked them to just one of the controller plugs to test it before fitting. It fired all the LEDs and ran all the patterns off the single connection, so 8 metres shouldn't make a difference?

Although the instructions with mine recommended that you didn't extend beyong 5 metres. It may be that their long term future is not quite so bright at longer lengths.

Okay, that's good to know.
Ultimately I want to run two 8 metre lengths off one controller.
I looked at buying 10 metre lengths and cutting them down but the price for 10 metre runs is quite a bit higher than 5 metre lengths.

The life span does not concern me, they will have a low usage profile as they are going to be mood lighting in the coving in home cinema.
