The ring terminals on the red alternator wire should connect to the top stud terminal on the solenoid (see pic below), shared with the thick battery feed lead. That's how the charging current from your alternator makes its way to the battery under your seat box.

The spade connection is the wire from your ignition switch that triggers the solenoid to pass the high starting current.

As Kev says, the wiring diagram in the Haynes is very clear. Well worth having.
