14 pin connector dash panel insert

Post by KennieTheCamper »

Hi All,

Please could you help, just got started on the road to camper vanning and got a VW T25 1.9 1983 petrol van.

I have various problems so am tackling one at a time the first being the dash panel connections, I've spent hours getting to know electronic diagrams, repairing the PCB (burning it out and repairing again), trying out a couple of the wire diagrams etc but cannot seem to find one that matches my dash panel connector.

I've put the connections back to the way they originally came which operates the majority of things correctly but I think the problem lies with the order of the 14 pin connector wires.

Could anyone take a look at attached photo of my connector and see where the fault is, pin 1 is on the left with the grey/blue wire. One more thing I forgot to mention that is NOT in the picture there is another wire GREEN in colour (you can see it just behind the others)?

Hi Kennie. I have an 1984 dg van with early fuse box. The colours on your terminal are pretty much the same as mine. I traced each wire through the pcb to see where it went and this was the result. Hope it helps.

Not sure about the green wire sorry. I followed most of these wires to see where they ended up maybe give that a go you never know there may be a pot of gold at the end of it lol. Good luck :ok

Can you post a pic of the dash panel and the pcb. Might get some clues from that. My 1984 dash dosnt have a clock or rev counter. It only has speedo temp and fuel gauges.

Hi Kennie, Your dash looks the exact same as mine. The wiring colours i gave you work on mine although there are a couple of differences from the diagram. Do any of the systems work when you hook it up? I think you may need to test the voltages going to the various connector points and also test the voltage regulator. Your pcb looks a bit jaded so this could be causing a lot of your problems. I dont think your clock area is the problem as in the pics it looks like the older one. I think you have two options. Get a new pcb ( the right one as there are a few different ones) which are like hens teeth. Or take one system at a time and trace it. If nothing is working then first thing to do is check your earth connections in main wiring loom and clean them up. ( good idea to do this anyway) . Im in the same boat as you. Tracing things and ruling out possible causes. Its a bugger lol :ok

Me again :) Just looked closer at pics and see the track seems broken at 2 and 5 at connector end. These are the earths so i would check that first. Also have you put in a new voltage regulator? The replacement ones you get now need to be fitted upside down to match the in and out of the original. Good luck :ok

FWIW - I produced this when I was fiddling around with my dash.
Looks like I have the same dash as yours (from petrol '84).
The pic shows the layout of the connector/pcb/leds/etc.

(note that as mine is a petrol - I didn't bother tracing out the diesel connections - lazy I know!)

I think the priority is to get the wires in that connector into the correct order - then see what is/isn't working.

Hi guys,

Bluebell: yes your spot on, that's because I burnt it out yesterday so I'm going to have to try and effect a repair again (Doh!) I'm not sure about the voltage regulator only just got the van so I don't think it's been replaced but not sure, any ideas on how I can confirm this?

Midlifecrisis: That's a great diagram, something which is driving me mad though is that I do not seem to have 2 brown wires and additionally I have green, Yellow that seem to be spare. Also mine is a petrol but I have white/red wire too? Is this because a later wiring harness may have been installed at some point do you think or are they just left out of the connector and not connected?

Thanks for the help guys.
