Split charge relay recommendations
Hi guys,
my current split charge relay has just given up in a shower of sparks.
It was a 4 terminal type, but I'm not sure what make.
What would you recommend to replace it?
Cheers
Tim

Re: Split charge relay recommendations
I don't currently have one wired in, but am thinking of going for an "intelligent" voltage sensing type, so that I won't have to run a wire from the engine bay, such as the TEC3M

Have a look at the "connecting fuse box to leisure battery" thread below. There is a picture of the raw components split charge.

Hi Zimbok,
I already have the system set up, I was just looking for recommendations on which relay to buy, since the existing one went pop.
What brand is yours? Is it a 4 or 5 terminal?

Re: Split charge relay recommendations
The one in my van says on it...
nagares
rl/180-12
12v / 100a
30 86 85 87
I did a quick search on eby and one came up. Just searched on " nagares rl"
I may be barking up the wrong tree. Not sure if that is the type of thing you are looking for. In any case good luck.

Re: Split charge relay recommendations
Hi Tim
Since you are replacing the relay and all the wiring is in place I recommend you 'upgrade' the relay for something a little heavier. I'm guessing all you have at present is a standard 4 pin relay with the standard 6.3mm terminals (rated at 30 or 40 amps only). To upgrade to something more substantial all you will have to do is change just TWO terminals to the larger 9.5mm type then fit one of these:

Otherwise a straight replacement would be:
http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/p ... ategory/36" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
These guys also sell the insulated 9.5mm terminals and pretty much anything else you might need to do this.

Re: Split charge relay recommendations
Thanks Martin,
On closer inspection my blown relay looks like a 70amp version, so I've ordered a replacement from your link. Thanks for your advice.
One last thing, as mine was sparking furiously when I removed it, I wasn't really paying much attention to which wires connected where.
Can you tell me which wires go where?
Cheers

Re: Split charge relay recommendations
The terminal numbers and what each connects to should be the same in this diagram.
So: 87 & 30 are the heavy wires going from starter to leisure batteries.
and
85 & 86 are the trigger (from alternator) and earth (onto the vehicle body or earth terminal)
