trailing arm bushes query with pics

Post by fairwynds »

Hi all
rear end refurb saga - day number heaven knows, continues.....! :-

Am sending off the trailing arms (and some wheels) for galvanizing next week.
Image

...so when they come back I will be pressing in some new trailing arm bushes. Have just had a look at them and the metal sleeve on each on has a 'grippy' end and a smooth end. Question is, which way around do they go? Grippy end on the side with the nut, or the side with the bolt head?
Thanks all.... 8)

'Grippy' end....

Smooth end....

i`ve always fitted the grippy end on the adjusting side.
it`s a big round cage and there`s too many animals in it for my liking. To help address this ring lee on 07977 765818.

....not sure I understand that, as BOTH the inner and outer sets of brackets have elongated holes for adjustment, for both vertical and horizontal plane adjustment/set up...... :?

well, Im obviously being a total dohnut, as I still dont get what you mean! I understand that (when speaking about only ONE trailing arm, the nearside one for eg) the outer one has a vertically elongated holes on both of the outer bracket holes. Bolt goes through from the outside, through washer, through first plate, through bush, through second plate, through washer, then through nut. This will then adjust the camber of the wheel, Tighten to specified torque.
The inner one has horizontally elongated holes in both of the inner bracket holes. This one will be able to set the toe in of the wheel.

So, same question, should the 'grippy' end of the bush be nearest the bolt head, OR the nut??

ta everso....

Any advice on fitting these bushes? can it be done at home with simple tools and limited facilities or does it need to go to an engineers and get pressed in with a hydraulic press or something with a bit more clout?
Thanks
Have a nice day !

Get em pressed in by a shop. I have same saga this week :D You can do it with a long threaded bolt and washers but it can take hours, thats if you succeed.

Its a simple enough task. Did all four of mine in a couple of hours. Just use a threaded bar, Socket and plenty of vaseline to slide them in !

The vaseline is the key..it wont affect the bushes and it will dry out so wont cause any probs..Did mine 12 months ago without any fuss. I still have the tool made up that I used to press them in.

You cant use a press..the arm is a funny shape so it wont fit in square. Tried this a few times..

tried both ways - 15 tonne press was pointless as, (per above) arms are a 'funny shape' !
VW do do a special tool which helps to feed the bushes into the sleeve, BUT
with libera use of washing up liquid on bush and inside sleeve, and a foot long length of threaded bar/nuts/washers and a suitably sized (large) socket, you can pop these in with a spanner and a helper - no problems. Four bushes in within a hour or so..... :ok

Will try it your way Tug. As it happens I was adjusting rear wheels brakes ready for MOT this month, whipped of wheel to make job easier and to my horror found that the bottom of the spring had eaten almost completely through the tubular retaining piece on swing axle/trailing arm,. Barely a tiny bit of metal holding it there. Mercdoctor walked past, peered over my shoulder in that all-knowing and direct manner of his and said "That's f%^&ed mate" and reappeared with a good second hand trailing arm, muttering something about eating VW probs for breakfast and to get on with it!

Anyway, old bushes on s/h one were removed yesterday with an acetalene torch (outer bolt seized solid in bush) and arm has gone off to be shot blasted and primed. New bushes are in the post. In the meantime I'm driving around like I had loose eggs on the back seat until arm is replaced sometime next week. :D

On top of that, one of the top washers on front drop links has decided to depart company and go up about three inches meaning I have to go almost to a stop to negate any sharp corner. Feels like I'm driving a ruddy milk float at the moment.

The trailing arm thats coming off, other than holes under the spring plate, could I'm sure be put back into service with a new piece of metal added as shown above. Unfortunately they can rot right through on top and even Baxter's replacement spring retainer may not be enough to salvage a damaged arm. Clearly some have more extensive rust and need a more substantial piece welded beneath this plate.

Marcus and I did discuss the galvanizing idea but felt it was overkill as they'd probably outlast entire van by 100 to 1. Good shotblast, two pack chassis black and underseal will be enough for me. The world will have run out of oil or the T25 outlawed by regulation long before they give up the ghost. - not a criticsm of the idea as its a very sensible one but just don't see its really needed in this particular instance. Mind you. I always felt bug heater channels should be galvanized and I think treating wheels this way is excellent!!

Shot blasted, red oxide and coat of Rustoleum inside and out (rather than 2-pack) ready for bushes and refit. To hell with VW bolts at a fiver though. Found matching ones from a specialist bolt place in Cov - 50p each. :D

Fitting tomorrow. Just to test the water I had a go to see if outside bolt was seized on mine - whayey, bush just sat still and bolt moved no prob!

Envy your galvanized ones fairywinds - you'll be cuddling those long after our campers have turned to dust. :D Hope the weather is good tomorrow. Mercdoctor and I finally finished a long list of jobs on member Ronsrecord's Joker including (with much chin scratching) finally figuring out why it ran so bad on petrol and revved its nuts off - dead injector and stuck idle stabilizer.

Plan is to 'simply' put the new bushes in, get the trailing arm on around lunchtime (geometry will be mostly guesswork for now) and try and tackle some of the umpteen corrosion points around windows, sills etc so I can re-roller later in the year. Its looking very scabby right now. Mind you, everything stops for Pikey Meet or my little 'un will moan at me for sure - at 7 years old he's a bigger fan of T25s than I am.

Wonder what it would cost to galvanize an entire T25? :D
