Brown stripe

Post by foxley »

I'm trying without success to remove the brown stripes so beloved of Autosleeper from my roof.
I've tried warming it up with a hairdryer and scraping with a stanley blade with very little progress.
Any advice will be tried out.

Try wiping with panel wipe. Then using a sharp blade. And wiping with panel wipe as you go. This sometimes works.

Yes they are very difficult to remove.
How hot did you get the decal?
There's a paint removing gun that gets very hot, but you have to be very careful.
Then there's the solvents I don't know which one would do the job, others might.
I think the quickest way is to get rather more aggressive.. but that means painting the area you have used the abrasive on.
Mine were removed, I hated them and they were in a shocking state, but the roof was painted afterwards, The fella who removed them used a hair dryer then heat gun to start with but ended up using an orbital sander as it was too time consuming using heat.

Good luck!

I've bought a small tin of nitro-moores to gingerly dab on.
My roof in in good nick apart from those bloody stripes.
As I'm reluctant to have the roof painted just yet I'm persevere down the chemical route.
Thanks and keep the ideas coming.

indeed it will...

solvents that melt glue and not plastic are rare.
because the paint is in the plastic family as well.

you need a boffin in chemistry

Try this stuff. It's excellent for removing adhesive and wont damage old paintwork.

3m do -or used to- a wheel type product that also removes coachines and stripes that doesn't damage your paintwork. From memory, you put it in a air or electric drill and anyway you go.

Oil-Flo looks like its worth a try if it lives up to its publicity.
The company is based in Ca, USA.
Do they have a UK distributor?

Yes they do, you can buy it from this firm:
http://www.cleaningspot.co.uk/acatalog/ ... _soap.html

Scroll down the page and you will see it there. I would imagine one bottle would do the trick; I've still got some left in mine after 5 years! Although its non-toxic, it does give off a strong smell, so bear that in mind, and, use latex gloves as otherwise your hands will stink for days....

How about one of these, or similar?

3M Stripe off disc

Not used one, and took a bit of googling to find it. But I'm sure I've seen something similar recommended on another forum (can't find the link or bookmark at the mo).

Yes, that looks to be the one I was thinking of; if not eBay, then Brown Brothers would cetainly stock it as they are 3m dealers.

I've found and ordered the Oil-Flo so I'll give it a try.
The wheel option looks like it would damage the surface underneath the stripe which would only open up a new can of worms.
It would have to be the last resort.
Thanks to everyone for the response.

No, thats the idea of it, it removes stripes but nothing else [unless you slip with the drill and its chuck hits your paint ] The you can use the oil flo to remove the bits of glue, etc.

But if you dont want to use the wheel thing, then juts try to lift a little section of the stripe and apply a little oil-flo so it can soften the glue and just keep going like that. It will be a slow process but the overall timespeant and cost, etc will far outreach the cost of respraying the panel!

Take your time with the job and it will be fine

If you're removing the stripe from the roof and you c*ck it up in places, as it's white, the whole roof need not be resprayed, Autosleeper followed the first line from the gutter with the stripe, so it would be very simply masked above that... and re painted in L90D using a plastic primer
