Window Winder

I just pulled my window winder apart by accident and can't figure out how to put it right.

I overtightened the bolt holdiing the handle on, this pulled out the splined pin that you can see when you take the handle off without removing the door card.

When I look through the hole the pin fits into there is just a smooth surface, and when the splined pin is replaced it just spins without engaging with the mechanism that moves the window.

should the pin be fixed in somehow?

I guess no one has replied cos they don't have an answer based on your description and either way, you're unlikely to see whats going on without door card or even winder mechanism removed, at which point the problem will be obvious then. Sorry not much more help but I think most will give same answer.

Can you post a photo of the problem..might give people a better vision of what is or isnt happening.

Ok got to the bottom of this.
Here are some pics and an explanation in case anyone else experiences this unlikely problem (it'll teach me to install silly bling...)

I removed the entire winder mechanism from the door a la Haynes.
Then I drilled out the riveted holes holding the two plates which form each side of the winder casing to separate the plates (two pieces on left hand side of pic below.

This is the winder pin with the splined end where handle attaches, over it slips a bit which engages with rest of mechanism (outlined in green). The 'green' bit was spinning freely on the pin, this is the problem. there was no visible means to lock these two parts together, I tried to weld them, but when weld ground/filed back to shape there was not enough weld left to hold the parts together. I have now stuck the two together with metal glue, this seems to be quite strong, hopefully it will hold, I think the amount of torque required to move the winder mechanism and window will not be much.

Then two other bits go on the pin, the first engages with the part that I glued onto the pin, there is a spring between these two parts to soften the shock when the window is wound fully up or down. then a cog fits over the top of last bit to go on, this engages with the long spiral cable thing that connects this bit to the bit that lifts the window up and down.

So now I just have to weld the two plates back together, then reinstall and see if it holds together.

wait a pain in the a*** for just doing up the bolt that holds the winder arm on tightly!

oh no ... this seems really involved ... the same thing has just happened to me - is this the only way to fix this issue?

Is there anyway of buying a replacement part rather than having a homemade fix ... surely this must have happened to more than one person.
