welding mask

Post by mbcamper »

For years I've used a welding mask which I have to nod my head to make it fall down over my face. Its a hit and miss experience which often doesn't work. Its really bad when welding in a confined space such as a wheel arch.

I'm very tempted with one of these automatic dimming masks like this:

Does anyone have any buying advise on which ones as good or not good?

Thanks

Mark

I have just started welding our van and got a cheap sealey autodimming mask...It is awesome compared to my old flip down one.

The best bit is being able to adjust the darkness level so that you can actually see what you are welding even when welding at low power.

Best £40 I have spent on tools in a while

I am sure someone else may have a different opinion but for me it was a great buy, mine also has a grind setting (which I think means it just doesn't activate the screen) which is pretty useful

That is a very good point about the full face mask. Constantly slamming it against the door pillars, sills etc

I've also been looking at a new welding mask and wondered whether anyone had tried one of these

Thanks for the replies. I've been browsing the MIG Welders Forum and also talking to a helpful sales person at WeldEquip. I'm shortly going to be the owner of one of these:

http://www.weldequip.com/swp-welding-helmet.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The specification has been recently updated so you can also use it for grinding too!

There are some much cheaper ones on Amazon / Ebay, but they have mixed reviews on the welders forum. I'm keen not to economise on something which protects my eyesight!

I'll report back on what I think about the mask.

We have a cheap one at work and I'm going to smash it if they try to make use it again....spots before the eyes! Stick with British standard graded ones..

Speedglas are suppose to be good although a bit expensive ,I have a cheap auto helmet but I find it hard to see where my torch is before I press the trigger.
But when I did my day course the teacher had a speedglas mask and the difference was amazing,so now saving for one of them.

Hand held shield for me, a bit set in my ways but sometimes a helmet is just cumbersome.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

I currently have a flip helmet and hand held and do prefer using the hand held in confined spaces, but there are times you need a third hand, so a solar is on the wanted list
