quick fire under body paint question.

Post by Cyrus »

Its been asked before but I can't find it anywhere.
What's the best paint to paint the underside of your bus?
I don't like hammerite but is it OK under there?

I painted a boat trailer with 3 coats of Hammerite once - it was absolutely useless, I found that it chipped at the slightest provocation and it didn't last very long at all. I only use it now for looks not protection.

I still have the remains of a 10 gal drum of zinc chromate primer - what is good for ships...... (courtesy of a friendly bosun!)

Many vehicles used to be protected with old engine oil years ago but I suppose mess as well as environmental issues would preclude that now. Just avoid slapping on underseal without some proper measures to deal with any existing corrosion. Personally I hate underseal. I had a tiny amount of corrosion underneath which I thoroughly wirebrushed, treated with vactan and then rustoleum so if there are any issues later on, they'll at least show up. With underseal it won't show up until the only solution is to weld in new metal. There are so many treatments now, the world is your oyster.
