Recon gearbox

Post by kelbak »

I have just been informed I require a recon gearbox (not getting 1st & rev & slipping now in second) the original set up was 1.6D JX code engine with 5 speed gearbox, engine changed to 1.9TDI engine code THU. Have been quoted £850.00 + VAT for recon gearbox, is this the norm!!!.

As Rob say's Aidan's the man. Reconditioning a gearbox properly is a specialist and very involved process, £800 may be about right.

it was bears who quoted me nearly £4000 , aidan could not build this box for me i asked him , the gearbox had uprated gears made to order lsd and was finished in a powder coated finish and they guaranteed it for 12 months it would cope with the increase in horsepower i was going to subject it to ,

Hello,

that'll be an AHU engine code I presume - if it's slipping in 2nd you might want a new clutch too - what is your flywheel/clutch setup with the tdi? If you're getting Aidan to recon the gearbox I'd consider sticking in a longer 5th too while you're there - I presume you have a 3H box which has a 0.82 ratio 5th - he can do 0.77,0.74 and 0.7 by memory, and you might find this nice on the motorway although with a standard AHU and 0.7 you might not maintain speed on hills - depending a bit on what wheels/roof etc... you have

He did a great job on my gearbox and highly recommend him

Ewen

no twin turbo or any turbo but quite a bit more power and torque than standard motor soon as i can get the money together and a good enough gearbox case i will be going ahead
