cylinder liners base and top seals-sealant or not?

Any views please on the use of any sealant mastic in addition to the new rubber rings and well cleaned and flatted mating surfaces? I can see haynes/bentley don't suggest it but I wondered if regular rebuilders used something to "help" a potentially fragile design and if so- what?. Have looked on the wiki and archive but did not come across anything-Thanks Jim

I am not a regular re-builder (only done a WBX once) but my vote would be "no".
Just keep it all clean and a light smear of engine oil.

No doubt others will be a long soon to add info.

E D I T = I forgot to mention, and as Rob points out, it IS important to use the correct (2 different) types of sealant on the base and on the stud nuts. If you get a decent quality kit of gaskets / seals it comes with them. I got mine from Brickwerks.

I wondered about the same thing when rebuilding Vinnie's wbx after his overheating. I just used sealant as instructed on the water jacket seals and the head nuts and he's been absolutely fine.

cheers for that, seems like such a vulnerable design when you look it, feels as if it need something to "fill the gaps". anyway, both heads back on today and we shall see soon how it goes-thanks for your help again
