Reading through the Wiki, I can learn that Webur carb.replacement isn't considered a good replacement,I see VW Heritage have a UK produced one on sale,as a replacement, though the small print makes mention that a rolling road should be used. But why a rolling road when surely its only a matterof getting the mixture adjusted correctly for correct co2 emission levels,and the tick over speed, or am I missing something?

I only ask as I have considered replacing the OE one on my van for something that might give a few more mpg with perhaps a better performance [don't want much, do I] However, the cost of this carb plus rolling road setup costs, etc might well mean my having to drive many thousand of miles before I saw a return on the costs involved :shock:

There is a business that re-builds the og carb...i'm not at work at the moment but I will see if I can find the details for you tomorow...i'm sure you could find them with a quick search.

Because they are not jetted to a T25 so yes it would tick over at the right mixture but once off the airbleed and tickover jet, then finding the right size transfer jet , then onto the right size mains is a job not worth doing as you get no better, infact worse mpg than a well set pierburg

pierburg 2e3's were fitted to an awful lot of cars... Vauxhall astra, cavalier, VW golf polo and many many more.

is there something wrong with your carb?

see now i rate them although many don't and never had a problem with one and if you find an xr2i or xr3i in the scrapyard it'll cost you bugger all and buy a mounting flange 3 stud to 4 stud conversion off ebay at a tenner game on :-)

It's not so much that there is anything wrong with it, I just wondered if there was a better replacement one on the market so as to give a general improvement. By the sound of it, theres no point in buying any replacement if it then needs altering, as you've mentioned; that begs the question why they are offering a replacement that will need altering; thats hardly an off-the -peg replacement!

Think I'll stay with what I have and do all the maintenance on it as per the Wiki :wink:

Ah I see,
well there has not been much research into saving fuel, save what VW did when switching from solex pict to the pierburg 2e3.
the pierburg offers a better mix of power with the vacuum operated second venturi.
By it's nature the more this second venturi is not opened and throttle action is made gentler and smoother, the less fuel is used.
More power is easily gotten by using a twin Delorto 38 set up. This has been done by a few folks on here and again if the right foot is light the mpg goes up, some say it is a lot better than the pierburg, with the dells though, when the right foot is heavy ..stupid grins appear at the amount of acceleration available, and the fuel gauge drops alarmingly.

As you rightly say, good maintenance of the ignition system and the fuel delivery system (including filters) is the best you can do

agree with kevtherev. i used twin 40,s on my 1.9 with 32mm venturi,s they certainly perked the motor up, now i use them on a 2.1 with bigger venturi,s. the advantage with a setup like this is that you can swap it to different engines and set it up perfectly. the single webber should work well if jetted correctly, that goes with any carb swap. also worth having a look at speedshops efi.
