What gearbox do I need?

Post by 72BUG »

My gearbox has packed up on my 2ltr Aircooled (CU engine)

Now looking for a replacement box.

Can anyone tell me what the box code is for this engine?

Thanks.
Martin.

Bugger! There's a DH on fleabay at £190

The sliders have a box for sale which would be idal as it's not too far away and not too pricey. Only problem is it's from a 1.6, but they had it fitted to their 2ltr.

Now I know nothing about gearboxes so what is the differece from a running and fitting point of view? Is it a really bad idea?

Thanks for the advice.
Martin.

Hmmm biggest difference is that a 1.6 is a clutch cable, and 2lt is hudraulic clutch. Presuming that if you have 2lt, the hydraulics are there.....dunno if the 1.6 gear box will work with that.

If its of interest I had a 1.6 ct box on our 2.0 cu engine and it only managed about 65 flat out .. not worth it unless your really stuck and its stupidly cheap ..

Thanks for the help and advice everybody. Looks like the 1.6 is a no goer. Too much work for what would basically be a bodge. I'd rather do the job properly.

So, still on the lookout for a 2ltr Cu box if anybody has one.

Thanks
Martin.

No not yet. Gonna try and source a second hand box first as it's quicker and cheaper. I need the van to get to work so need to get it back on the road asap.

I may well have the old box recond once it's out.

Yeah that's another bit of bad news I found out today.

Been put on to someone who does though so if I can't get one at least I have a backup plan.
