afraid i do dude,£26 to dover, before the fuel prices shot up!!!! honestly
Re: 1.6 Td performance
If you're getting 55mpg out of a JX, it must be because of all those flying pigs you've harnessed to pull you along.

Maybe not - but I think your maths is probably a little suspect.

Re: 1.6 Td performance
65 - 70 mph ? You guys are going too fast
55 - 60 is cruising speed and at that you will get 35 mpg or even better. My personal best was 41.5 mpg averaged over a holiday in Ireland, tootling along back roads
The 1.6 td Syncro currently levels out at 33 mpg in day to day non-motorway driving, mixed country roads and town and not bumbling at holiday speeds either.
The secret to driving a 1.6 TD in hilly country is to get the gear change right. You don't want it labouring at low revs, nor should it be screaming. It's happiest at mid range with the turbo going full blast. Sometimes that means dropping a gear, going a bit slower than you (theoretically) could and forming an orderly queue behind you ...but so be it

Re: 1.6 Td performance
I am getting circa 40 MPG in my 1988 1.6 TD JX hightop. I typically drive at 60 MPH on motorways, even when over-taking certainly don't go above 65

Re: 1.6 Td performance
Well I'm clearly doing something wrong or my engine needs a good sorting out
Thought here for mikeymancs, you might have a better chance of finding the bit you need by posting here or at the Brick-yard as there are more T25 owners here than on JK.
Just a thought.

Re: 1.6 Td performance
Hi I have a pop top Westy California with a Vege engine (29,000 miles) and recon gearbox and I recently got 35mpg travelling at 100kph all the way from Snodonia to Lincolnshire a 265mile trip. I could see on flatter runs and with me being more used to the gearbox as it was my first long distance drive collecting the van that around 40mpg-42mpg is possible, but anymore I seriously doubt and anyone suggesting 50 + mpg isn't on this planet with an underpowered 2 tonne van with the aerodynamics of a brick! I am happy at 35mpg and with the speed 60mph is fine by me and doesn;t cause hold ups or frustrate other drivers.

Re: 1.6 Td performance
Its not so easy to calculate a one off trip......
What's in your tank when you fill up.
What's left over when you complete your trip.
If you are a gallon out....it makes the final numbers change.
Out of interest ......what did the vw literature of the day say......for a jx powered pop top in fine fettle. I doubt anyone can better it.......or test it as accurately.
I switched my jx to a ahu tdi for a couple of reasons.
Wanted the extra umpf to get up big climbs without losing speed.
Wanted to future proof my van.
Im sure I get better mpg than in my jx.......but doubt its 50mpg though...

Re: 1.6 Td performance
35 MPG at a steady 56.....sounds about right ....anymore than that and your calculations are suspect somewhere
