Water system cleanliness

Post by badger »

Anyone got any advice regarding keeping the water system/pipework clean during the cold season?
The van's not likely to be used much, so should i drain the tank completely?(It's inside the van)
What about the submersible pump, should this be left in water or allowed to try out?
Is it best to replace the water hose each year?

I use my tank for drinking water, just clean it once a year with milton fluid (for cleaning babies bottles :) ) or you can get a water system purifier from caravan shops. Start of the season I half fill the tank with a solution of milton and water, take the van for a run to slosh it about the tank then pump it out through the tap to get all the pipes. Then rinse thouroughly with clean water to get rid of the taste (slightly 'bleachy' but won't harm you) then refill with clean water. Should be fine for the rest of the year as long as you don't leave the water lying in it for too long.

Drain the system if your expecting frost, it can damage the pump or tap.

If you clean the system as above the pipework should be fine.
