If the cable is frayed it may be snagging in the sheath.

Check the cable has no kinks or sharp bends . remove cable from back of speedo and run some oil down the inside 3in1 or something like that.

Just to be a pain ..... I had that with my van .................................... installed a new cable, and it made no difference, was just the same......... So my conclusion was, that it must be the speedo.

3 to 4 years later on, it is still like it.

Good luck.

Like Rob says..two types. The early screw type was only for a year or so. If you got the screw type they are difficult to get but you can use one off a bay T2 :ok

On the wheel end, If the square hole in the hub through which the cable goes has semi-rounded, you can use a flat bar or chisel from inside the cap to rework the hole and then file it square again. Otherwise its a duff cable or a loose cog in the speedo, all of which are usually repairable.

If it's clicking 3in1 should do it, if it's slipping it's normally the cap, cheap as chips from VW allegedly. If it's the inner cable just take off the circlip at the wheel and replace just the inner cable using the sheath as a guide to feed the new cable down.
