Fuel tank find

Took my tank out today to give it spruce up and some rustproofing.
I gave the tank a shake to get any debris out of the big filler hole and low and behold two discs fell out! They are aluminum and about the size of five pence piece and about 8mm thick. One side looks rough and the other side is smooth side's got E stamped on it.
Any clues? Has my fuel sender thrown a wobbly?
(81 cu if that makes any difference)

Not fuel sender but sounds like the 'punch-outs' from the holes on the top of the tank where the breather pipes go in.

Ah, thats emergency currency. VW provided these little luxuries but we don't talk about it on here - mums the word.

Not what I thoought they were! Just read again and missed the 8mm thick bit...!
Ooh-err. Wonder if they were something dropped in there as an 'additive' to get more miles. The wonders of advertising and all that!

they do look like the things that are/were being sold to turn unleaded petrol to leaded.

They look to me like lead pellets that are put in tanks so unleaded fuel can be used. I saw them on a tv programme some time ago
