Engine hesitant and keeps stoppping

Post by Die Bulli Familie »

My van has broken down three times in six weeks. The van seems o.k. from cold, maybe slightly hesitant whilst accelerating. Once hot it becomes more hesitant and occasionally the engine has died. Sometimes it restarts and all is o.k., sometimes it restarts but it's difficult to keep the engine going, it's very hesitant, sometimes it won't start at all. So far I have done the following;

Replaced fuel filter
Removed fuel pump and checked operation
Checked exhaust for leaks
Checked inlet manifold/air for leaks
Cleaned all ignition terminals
Changed spark plugs
Changed rotor arm (for old one)
Changed Distributor cap (for old one)
Changed plug leads (for old ones)
Checked coil
Checked hall pick up in distributor
Checked timing
Checked vacuum advance
Checked operation of automatic choke

The engine is 1.9 DG from around 1985, I've done about 20000 miles around Europe and this is the first real problem.

Has anyone seen a similar fault? Can anyone suggest a solution?

I'm in North Wales and it'd definately not very warm at the moment.

I think the problem is with the fuelling, but I might try new plug leads/distributor cap just to rule out having two bad sets

i'd be cleaning the carb out, and replacing the fuel filter before i spend any more money.....

just a thought, you have only got one fuel filter havent you? some idiots install a second ( or even third) and the pump isnt designed to pull fuel through anymore than one, which must be next to the tank, and gravity fed in part.

I've replaced the fuel filter and yes there is only one.

I've sprayed cleaner in the carb. but I think the next move is to look closer at the carb.
