Mine doesn't like hills and will go down to about 30mph if the hill's long enough.

Just thought that was the nature of the beast!

check the accelerator, when foot to floor, is fully opening throttle

I nearly sold my air cooled as the hill to and from work was very uncomfortable. Then during a service I reved it foot flat to the floor, and John found nearly and inch of slack in the cable.... :-) Happy days, adjusted and got nearly 40 mph all the way up the steep hill from a flying start!

Feel sure its a fuel prob as it realy struggles and coughs on hills . don't know what to try next.

Beyond cable movement, if it runs fine at a wide throttle opening on motorways, its not likely to be fuel starvation. Could be timing, if its not simply just a tired engine with low compression.

When my van had a wrecked valve seat it would happily get up to 70 on the flat, but wouldn't pull up any steep hills. Check the compression and see if it points towards one cylinder not coming to the party.

Since I got the head replaced the van can cope with any hills I point it at. A couple of weeks ago it made it up Llanberis Pass in both directions in second and even managed a mad hill in Aberystwyth 1 in 4 in first from a stand start. Check it out on Street View.

Street View doesn't really do it justice.
