gearbox ball and cup falling out

Post by jim potter »

hi guys,

im now very near the end of a 2.0agg conversion , my van was originally a 2.1 waterboxer .
the problem i'm having is that the ball that sits on the end of the gearbox comes out of the cup on the shift rod when you try and return it neutral .

i'm assuming that because ive fitted the rear diesel shift rod, that my linkage is out of alignment ?
i have a good neutral in the van , so is it a case of following the setup guide on the wiki .
or do i need to be looking elsewhere .

thx jim

Fit a new nylon ball/lever. May just be worn out. They do wear and available on ebay (Brickwerks too - plus postage) but to sort you out medium term, use a couple of cable ties, loose enough to allow full movement but pulled up enough to prevent shift rod dropping off ball. Chances are the dust/grit cover is missing or split too. This tends to allow road dirt in there, wears things away and makes the fit less than ideal.

Lever on its own:

better still (lever plus extras):

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-CAMPER-T25 ... 2c6077b8f0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - £18 incl postage

Brickwerks sell them. £25.70 plus postage although thats lever on its own.

your rear diesel shift rod is in conjunction with diesel gearbox mount and engine bars and you have the deeper cup on the rear shift rod ?

if that's all correct then ensure the rear bush plate that is bolted to gearbox is fully pushed up when the bolts are tightened so that the cup and ball are fully mated and the skirt of the boot that joins them is fully pulled down over the cup like you would want your daughter dressed leaving the house for a night out

did you replace the rear bush ? Did you make sure bracket is correctly assembled and right way around when putting it all back on shaft ?

Thanks aidan /covkid

i have all diesel bits as mentioned by aidan
.

ill check the bush plate plate and align as you suggest , i'll also check the bracket .
i have no rubber skirt on it , so that's obviously the problem ( i guess ), best i get one ordered .
i will try to secure as a temp fix with cable ties , so i can move it around the yard .

Cable ties (and a plastic bag to keep out the dirt) lasted me three years so it does work. I've since replaced the lever/ball and cover and all is well, but its a useful 'get you about' solution.
