L shaped coolant pipe

Post by nicktennear »

Hello all, it's been a while since I've needed to do anything major on the van but I've got a leak. It's coming from the metal coolant pipe that comes off the pump and into the thermostat housing. It's the blue one here - not my engine, it's the immaculate bay of Hakuna Matata http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh14 ... 001-11.jpg The part number is 025-121-081/G

SS from Brickwerks is around the £80 but will last forever and fit properly

The JK and fleabay option is £59/£49 but has a lot of negative feedback about fitting and fettling.

Anyone have options for a cheapish option that actually fits without fiddling about. I hate fiddling about.

I know this is going to turn into a can of worms involving various bits that are stuck, cracked or rotten. :D

Hiya!

this will be the comment you will get.

Brickwerks.

fit once and forget.

You think they want to fettle around in the workshop? Nope. May cost a little more, but an hour of fettling is more in labour charge than the 20 quid difference....

oh - and try not to disturb anything else,....like the thermostat housing

I knew you were going to say this. Somewhere there's a heaven where every cheap knock off T25 part goes after being sworn at and binned; and it's busy. :ok

it's long been an issue this pipe and even genuine VW they weren't brilliant which wasn't too bad when they were £22 trade and lasted 5 years but once they doubled or more then the s/s one makes sense other than the new differential electrolitic corrosion issue we don't know about

Ah yes, galvanic corrosion. Perhaps one could try fitting gaskets to prevent the metals from touching and not use seawater as coolant.

It would be good to get your thoughts after fitting it. Mine is definitely on its way out and I'm looking to do it asap - it looks like its started to bulge  and a tad corroded. Figured I might as well do the water pump at the same time. :D

Going with Brickworks, will keep you informed, might even be able to take some pics.
